We are thrilled to be bringing Shubbak Festival 2023 to London and the UK with an invitation to pause and take a breath.
A breath coloured, informed, and inflected by the works of Arab and South West Asian and North African (SWANA) artists, makers and cultural practitioners. Those who are positioning their practice as provocation in the midst of environmental and social chaos; who, in encountering the urgent issues of today as well as those that have preoccupied us humans for millennia, refuse to shy away from discomfort. Those who take an intersectional approach and become part of a transnational wave of counterculture by virtue of challenging convention. Those who are choosing a joy, a love, a connection that digs deep when everything around us can feel atomising.
From 23 June to 9 July 2023, and together with this beautiful force that is our artistic family, we will be planting our hearts in the venues we step into, serenading London’s streets with poetry, reverting to our ancestral knowledge of storymaking as a healer, remembering what it is to play like our children, and dancing to rhythms our bodies have long held though our minds may not remember.
We open the festival with a group exhibition foregrounding the works of North African artists in a conscious act of acknowledgement and redress of the historic imbalance between the Mashreq and the Maghreb. Across the programme, we present searing commentary on the intersection of Blackness and womanhood in the Arab world, look back to move forward in somatic practice that centres the body as a site of wisdom, and bathe in the tenor of haunting voices along the river.
We will shake up the walls of comedy halls with three comediennes who tear through toxic masculinity, ableism and the corruption of the political classes with incisive humour.
In a piercing outcry to address environmental catastrophe, a tribe of Global Majority women mourn our extractive relationship to earth, while a music icon presents his solo debut on the interconnection between consumerism, mental health and environmental collapse. Young voices delve into dialogue with the land in communal foraging and mudlarking excursions and an artist takes to the soil as the stage for his artistic practice. A number of this edition’s artists are also activists - whether by choice or necessity - and with this dual role, they invite us to release, to reinvigorate, to find that hope we so yearn for.
We will mark moments in history that continue to have palpable ripple effects from the personal to the geo-political, whilst questioning the aesthetics of trauma.
A nucleus of solidarity across the region, we turn and return to Palestine again and again. We mark 75 years since the Nakba, the forced displacement of Palestinian people from their homes and land, with an electrifying dance piece on the embodiment of trauma, a cyclical play re-interpreted by a Tunisian troupe, an online residency and exhibition by a Disabled artist reflecting on life under siege, meditative collective embroidery circles, innovative permaculture from Bethlehem, and the sound of cultural defiance across a number of music gatherings and films. Twenty years since the violent and unlawful invasion of Iraq, we reflect on what it means for Iraqi artists to make work on their own terms; we feature an unprecedented participatory encounter between Kurdish artists using cutting-edge technology to cross borders, new writing from the diaspora, and an immersive journey into the world of an intelligent virus born out of war.
Shubbak is for everyone. We invite you to gravitate towards the familiar, will walk with you towards the intrigue, and together we welcome chance kinship. Our commitment to access means that our festival is making a real effort to ensure the arts become accessible for all, with our website being powered by Alt-text, BSL interpretation and captioning provided, relaxed performances across much of our programme, and ensuring all our venues are physically accessible. We lovingly take up space with the conviction that our narratives are legitimate without need for greatness nor ceremonious acts, in the deep knowledge that the value is in our coming together.

P.S. A note on Arab cultures - in our work to address the multiple modalities in which colonialism manifests across space and time, we have taken a conscious step towards pluralising the word ‘cultures’ where it was previously used in the singular in our strapline. This is a first effort to recognise and honour the diversity of peoples and practices who inhabit and originate from the region. We continue to educate ourselves on the power and limitations of language.

يسرنا أن نعلن عن انطلاق مهرجان شُبّاك 2023 في لندن والمملكة المتحدة مع دعوة للتوقف والتقاط نفس.
أنفاس يلونها، ويميزها، ويؤثر فيها أعمال فنانين، ومبدعين، وممارسين ثقافيين عرب ومن منطقة جنوب غرب آسيا وشمال أفريقيا، أولئك الذين يضعون حرفتهم في موضع الاستفزاز والتحريض في وسط الفوضى البيئية والاجتماعية، والذين يرفضون التنائي عن المشقة والألم في مواجهة القضايا الملحة التي نجد أنفسنا أمامها اليوم وتلك التي شغلتنا نحن البشر لآلاف السنين، والذين يتبعون نهجاً تقاطعياً ويصيرون جزءاً من موجة من الثقافة المضادة العابرة للحدود لتحديهم التقاليد والأعراف، والذين يختارون الفرح، والحب، والروابط التي تظل راسخة عندما يبدو كل شيء حولنا وكأنه يتفتت.
سنزرع قلوبنا في الأماكن التي نتواجد فيها، وسنُطرِب أسماع شوارع لندن بالشعر، وسنلجأ إلى معرفتنا بصنعة سرد القصص التي ورثناها عن أسلافنا كوسيلة للتعافي، وسنتذكر إحساس اللعب مثل أطفالنا، وسنرقص على إيقاعات لطالما حفظتها أجسادنا وإن كانت قد نسيتها عقولنا، بصحبة أسرتنا الفنية الرائعة، مصدر قوتنا، في الفترة من 23 حزيران/يونيو حتى 9 تموز/يوليو 2023.
نفتتح المهرجان بمعرض جماعي يبرز أعمال فنانين من شمال أفريقيا بإدراك وتدارك واعيين للاختلال التاريخي بين المشرق والمغرب، ونقدم في برنامجنا بياناً لاذعاً عن تقاطعية العنصرية ضد أصحاب البشرة السوداء مع الأنوثة في العالم العربي، وننظر إلى الوراء لنتقدم إلى الأمام في فعل جسدي يركز على الجسد باعتباره موقعاً للحكمة، ونغمر أنفسنا بالأصوات الصادحة التي تطاردنا على طول النهر.
سنهز جدران قاعات الكوميديا مع ثلاث فنانات كوميديات يوجهن ضرباتهن إلى الذكورية السامة، والتمييز ضد ذوي الإعاقة، وفساد الطبقات السياسية بروح من الدعابة الثاقبة.
وفي صرخة احتجاج قوية ضد الكارثة البيئية، تنعي قبيلة من النساء من الأغلبية العالمية علاقتنا الاستخراجية بالأرض، بينما يقدم أحد أيقونات الموسيقى عرضه الفردي الأول عن العلاقة بين الاستهلاكية، والصحة العقلية، والانهيار البيئي، وتخوض أصوات شابة في حوار مع الأرض في نزهات جماعية للبحث عن النباتات والأطعمة البرية والتنقيب عن الأشياء القيمة مع فنانة تلجأ إلى التربة باعتبارها مسرحاً لهذه الممارسة الفنية، وعدد من الفنانين المشاركين في النسخة الحالية من المهرجان ناشطون أيضاً – سواء بالاختيار أو بالضرورة – وهم يدعوننا، بدورهم المزدوج هذا، إلى إطلاق العنان للأمل الذي نصبو إليه، وتجديده، والعثور عليه.
سنحيي ذكرى لحظات تاريخية لا يزال لها آثار مضاعفة وملموسة، من شخصية إلى جيوسياسية، بينما نتدارس جماليات الصدمة.
نلتفت إلى فلسطين ونرجع إليها مرة بعد أخرى باعتبارها نواة للتضامن عبر المنطقة، حيث نحيي ذكرى مرور 75 عاماً على النكبة والنزوح القسري للشعب الفلسطيني من ديارهم وأرضهم بأداء راقص وساحر عن تجسيد الصدمة، ومسرحية دورية يعيد تفسيرها فرقة تونسية، وإقامة فنية ومعرضاً على الإنترنت لفنانة من ذوات الإعاقة تتأمل حياتها تحت الحصار، ودوائر تطريز جماعية تأملية، ومبادرة زراعة مستدامة مبتكرة من بيت لحم، وصوت التحدي الثقافي عبر عدد من التجمعات الموسيقية والأفلام، وبعد عشرين عاماً من الغزو العنيف وغير القانوني للعراق، نتأمل فيما يعنيه أن يقوم الفنانون العراقيون بعملهم وفقاً لشروطهم الخاصة، حيث نقدم لقاءً تشاركياً غير مسبوق بين فنانين أكراد باستخدام أحدث التقنيات لعبور الحدود، وكتابات جديدة من المهجر والشتات، ورحلة غامرة إلى عالم فيروس ذكي وُلِد من رحم الحرب.
شُبّاك مهرجان للجميع، ونحن ندعوكم إلى الانجذاب نحو المألوف، وسنسير معكم نحو الفضول الآسر، ونرحب معاً بروح الألفة التي تخلقها الصدفة، ويعني التزامنا بالوصول أننا نبذل جهداً حقيقياً لضمان أن تصبح الفنون متاحة للجميع؛ ولهذا يعمل موقعنا بخاصية النص البديل لتلبية احتياجات الأشخاص المكفوفين، ونوفر ترجمة للفعاليات بلغة الإشارة البريطانية، ونقدم عروضاً تلائم طريقة تقديمها احتياجات الجميع على تنوع قدراتهم عبر جزء كبير من برنامجنا، كما نضمن أن تكون جميع الأماكن مزودة بالتسهيلات اللازمة لدخول الأشخاص ذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة، ولدينا العديد من الفعاليات المجانية وقوائم أسعار متدرجة تتيح لمختلف الأشخاص الدفع حسب إمكاناتهم في العديد من الفعاليات الأخرى، ولا يزال برنامجنا للتذاكر المجانية مستمراً، ويتعزز هذا كله بخدمة رعاية الأطفال التي نقدمها هذا العام، وإذا كنتم من ذوي الدخل المنخفض أو ليس لديكم مصدر دخل ولا يمكنكم تحمل تكلفة التذاكر، فتواصلوا معنا.
ينطلق مهرجان شُبّاك من مكان وفرة، ولهذا سنحتفل معاً في مناسبات عدة، فانضموا إلينا للراحة واللعب والاحتفال والرقص مهما كانت عقيدتكم، أو معتقدكم، أو خلفيتكم وتنفسوا، ونحن نشغل هذه المساحة بحب وبقناعة بأن سردياتنا مشروعة دون الحاجة إلى العظمة أو الفخامة، واثقين في أن قيمتنا تكمن في اجتماعنا معاً.
هذا هو مهرجان شُبّاك، حيث تربطنا الثقافات العربية جميعاً.

ملحوظة بشأن الثقافات العربية: نتصدى في عملنا للأشكال المتعددة التي يتجلى بها الاستعمار عبر المكان والزمان، وقد اتخذنا خطوة واعية نحو استخدام كلمة "الثقافات" بصيغة الجمع، بعد أن كنا نستخدمها بصيغة المفرد، في شعار المهرجان، وهذا أول جهد نبذله للإقرار بتنوع الشعوب والممارسات التي تسكن المنطقة وتنتمي إليها والاحتفاء بهما، وما نزال نثقّف أنفسنا عن قوة اللغة ومحدوديتها.
