نشأ المشروع عن ورشة عمل تشاركية بعنوان ذكريات من الوطن، حيث شاركت فيها خمس وعشرون امرأة من الجالية العراقية والعربية في لندن، في حوار حول المكان والتاريخ والذاكرة.
طـُلب من النساء أن يخترن شيئاً له قيمة عاطفية أحضرنَه مَعهُن من وطنهن إلى لندن أو أحضره أحد أفراد عائلاتهن.
خلال ورشة العمل عملت رند مع المشاركات على أخذ مقتطفات من قصصهن الشخصية، وتسجيلها لإنتاج سلسلة من النصوص المكتوبة والتسجيلات المرئية التي تصف الشعور بالصراع الذي يستدعيه فقدانهن وحنينهن للوطن.
"عِندما وصلت إلى لندن، كنت أذهب لمشاهدة معالم المدينة وبغير إرادة أبدأ بتسمية الأماكن التي أراها باسم الأماكن في العراق. فأقول "دعنا نذهب إلى المنصور"، أقصد شارع ادجوير (Edgware Road). بعض الأماكن تبدو كذلك، تبدو مألوفة وتشبه أماكن كنت أذهب إليها في مدينتي (بغداد)... نتمسك بأشياء، بخبرات ومواقف من غير أن نلاحظ ذلك."

فن التوثيق هو ثيمة مركزية في عمل رند الإبداعي. فمن خلال استكشاف الذاكرة الفردية والجمعية تعيد رند تركيب الأحداث التاريخية وتجارب الماضي المُجزأة.
المشروعان (مشاهد مما نجى) و(ذكريات من الوطن) هما جزء من عمل الفنانة البحثي الحالي في السرديات التاريخية والثقافية والشخصية التي تدور حول العراق.
Every Act of Recognition Alters What Survives is an ongoing project by Iraqi artist Rand Abdul Jabbar. The project emerged from a participatory workshop entitled Memories of Home which engaged twenty five women of the Iraqi and Arab diaspora in London in conversation about place, history and memory.
The women were asked to select an object of sentimental value that they, or their family members, brought with them to London from their home country.
During the workshop, Rand worked with participants to extract and record their individual stories to produce a series of written, oral and visual recordings that described the conflicting experiences associated with their loss of, and longing for, ‘home’.
“When I arrived here in London, I would go sightseeing and unintentionally started calling the places I see after places in Iraq. I would say “let’s go to Al-Mansour”, meaning Edgware Road… Some places are like that, they feel familiar and similar to places I’ve been to in my hometown (Baghdad)…We hold on to certain things, certain expressions and attitudes without us noticing.”

The art of documentation is a central theme within Rand’s creative practice. By exploring individual and collective memories, she produces fragmentary reconstructions of historic events and past experiences.
Both Every Act of Recognition Alters What Survives and Memories of Home, are part of the artist’s current research into historic, cultural and personal narratives surrounding Iraq.

Every Act of Recognition Alters What Survives is commissioned by Shubbak. Memories of Home was co-produced by Shubbak with Grand Junction in partnership with the Iraqi Association. It consisted of a series of virtual meeting sessions held in the summer of 2020 followed by a residency in London.
