Inspired by the legend of the Maghrebi Muslim traveller Ibn Battuta, this original piece of theatre explores travel, borders and movement—then and now.
Following in the footsteps of Ibn Battuta, who journeyed across the Arab and Islamic world in the 14th century, the ensemble weaves together a mosaic of stories that transcend place and defy borders. Ibn Battuta Travels roams through time and space, questioning who gets to travel and why.
Directed by Tanushka Marah and supported by Associate Director Yasmeen Audisho Ghrawi, the play has been co-created with community participants in West London who are connected to the SWANA region. It is an ensemble piece, rooted in physicality and collective movement.
Ibn Battuta Travels is a co-production between Shubbak Festival and Seenaryo, in partnership with Grand Junction. Working in Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine and Syria, Seenaryo co-creates collaborative, powerful and imaginative theatre, putting participants at the heart of the creative process. Premiering at the 2025 Shubbak Festival, Ibn Battuta Travels will continue its journey across the Levant later in the year, using the power of storytelling to unite, resist and reimagine.

مستوحاة من أسطورة الرحّالة المسلم المغربي ابن بطوطة، تستكشف هذه المسرحية الأصلية مفاهيم السفر والحدود والتنقّل – في الماضي والحاضر.
تتبع المسرحية خُطى ابن بطوطة، الذي جاب العالم العربي والإسلامي في القرن الرابع عشر، حيث تنسج الفرقة لوحة فسيفسائية من الحكايات التي تتجاوز المكان وتتحدى الحدود. "رحلات ابن بطوطة" تجوب الزمان والمكان، وتتساءل: من يُسمَح له بالسفر؟ ولماذا؟
بإخراج تانوشكا ماراه ودعم من المخرجة المشاركة ياسمين أوديشو غراوي، تم ابتكار هذا العمل بالتعاون مع مشاركين من المجتمعات المحلية في غرب لندن، ممن تربطهم صلات بمنطقة جنوب غرب آسيا وشمال أفريقيا (SWANA). المسرحية عمل جماعي يرتكز على الجسد والحركة الجماعية.
"رحلات ابن بطوطة" هو إنتاج مشترك بين مهرجان شُبّاك ومؤسسة سيناريو، بالشراكة مع غراند جانكشن. تعمل سيناريو في لبنان، الأردن، فلسطين وسوريا، حيث تشارك في إنتاج مسرحيات تعاونية قوية ومبدعة، تضع المشاركين في صميم العملية الإبداعية. يُعرض العمل لأول مرة في مهرجان شُبّاك 2025، على أن يواصل رحلته عبر منطقة المشرق في وقت لاحق من العام، مستعينًا بقوة السرد القصصي للتوحيد والمقاومة وإعادة التخيل.
