Marking Narratives with Issam Kourbaj

A collaborative programme celebrating the creative heritage of Arab and SWANA communities of West London, themed on recognition, resilience, togetherness and creative well-being.

Shubbak is thrilled to be collaborating with ACAVA Studios to present Marking Narratives, a community programme led by Syrian-born artist Issam Kourbaj. 

Through a series of 5 art workshops between 28 April and 2nd May, participants will explore mark-making as a form of cultural storytelling. They will engage with Kourbaj’s practice, and experiment with materials and creative processes to transform their ideas into tangible artworks and experiences. By creating and stamping messages on different surfaces, participants will weave together personal and collective cultural narratives of heritage, connection, and belonging. 

The programme also delves into the link between culture, creativity, and well-being, while embracing the themes of solidarity, resilience, and shared humanity—a central focus of Kourbaj’s work. Using found materials and ready-made objects, Kourbaj’s practice adds depth and resonance to this community-driven project.

About Issam Kourbaj

Issam Kourbaj is a Syrian-born artist whose multidisciplinary practice explores displacement, memory, and resilience. With a background in architecture, fine art, and performance, Kourbaj’s work addresses global social issues and has been exhibited internationally at venues such as the British Museum, the V&A, and the Venice Biennale.
