Hamed Sinno: In Conversation
Hamed Sinno reflects on their work at the forefront of conversations around representational politics, free speech, and sexual and gender justice, as well as their creative process ahead of their debut solo performance at the Barbican.
As part of their residency with Shubbak Festival over the past months, Hamed spent hours trawling through documents, books and sound archives in the basement of the British Library. They return to the library for an honest and intimate conversation with a childhood friend. They delve into the process of making Poems of Consumption, a literary song cycle that explores the resonances between Amazon-era consumerism, mental illness, unrequited love, and environmental collapse.
Hamed Sinno is a composer, writer, and performer. They write and lecture about popular culture as engaged practice, and vocalities as sites of political negotiation. They were the lyricist and front-person for Mashrou Leila since 2008. They have a BFA from the Department of Architecture and Design at the American University of Beirut, and an MA in Digital Musics from Dartmouth College. Their full-length opera, Westerly Breath, was in development at The Industry Los Angeles, and will debut at the New York Met Museum in 2024. Co-commissioned by Shubbak Festival and Barbican,Poems of Consumption, a song cycle exploring the overlaps of consumerism, mental illness, and environmental crisis will debut on July 8th, 2023.

قضى (حامد) ساعات في تصفح الوثائق، والكتب، والأرشيفات الصوتية في قبو المكتبة البريطانية كجزء من إقامته الفنية لدى مهرجان شُبّاك على مدار الأشهر الماضية، وهم/ن يعودون/يعدن إلى المكتبة لإجراء حوار صادق وحميمي مع أحد أصدقاء الطفولة، كما يغوصون/يغصن في عملية كتابة "قصائد الاستهلاكية"، وهي دورة غنائية أدبية تستكشف الأصداء المتبادلة بين الاستهلاكية في عالمنا المعاصر، والمرض النفسي، والحب غير المتبادل، والانهيار البيئي.
(حامد سنّو) مؤلف، وكاتب، ومؤدٍ، وندفة ثلج هشة تقاتل من أجل العدالة الاجتماعية، وهم/ن يكتبون/يكتبن ويحاضرون/يحاضرن عن الثقافة الشعبية كممارسة تعاونية تشاركية والأصوات كمواقع للتفاوض السياسي، وقد كانوا/كنّ مؤلف الأغاني والمؤدي الرئيسي لفرقة "مشروع ليلى" منذ عام 2008، وهم/ن حاصلون/ات على بكالوريوس في الفنون الجميلة من قسم الهندسة المعمارية والتصميم في الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت وماجستير في الموسيقى الرقمية من كلية دارتموث، وكانوا/كنّ يعملون/يعملن على أوبراهم/ن الكاملة بعنوان "النسمة المتجهة غرباً" بشركة (ذا إندستري) بلوس أنجلوس وستُعرَض لأول مرة في متحف المتروبوليتان بنيويورك في عام 2024، وسيُقدَّم عرض "قصائد الاستهلاكية"، وهي دورة غنائية تستكشف تداخلات الاستهلاكية، والمرض النفسي، والأزمة البيئية، بتكليف مشترك من مهرجان شُبّاك ومركز الباربيكان لأول مرة في الثامن من تموز/يوليو 2023.
