In Shubbak’s first-ever collaboration with the ground-breaking Vital Capacities, Palestinian artist Shaima Ali takes up a digital residency throughout May 2023. The work she develops will be shared as part of Shubbak Festival 2023.

Shaima Muhammad Ali is an artist from the destroyed village of Beit Thul in Palestine. She uses sculptural elements and video art to explore the liminal space between the personal and the collective, where it  is a point of intersection and where it is a point of departure. She draws her inspiration from that which demands an interruption to the every day. Her art is political in that it refuses to take on a singular perspective, preferring to reflect the mixture and entwinement of politics in the day-to-day of the Palestinian individual through their life, hopes and dreams.

Vital Capacities online residency programme offers artists an opportunity to share artwork, have a platform, develop new connections, have meetings with curators and arts professionals, and to build a new network. Residencies last for one month, are flexible, and can be built around artists’ commitments, enabling artists to create, add and participate according to their schedules.

Shaima was one of 8 participants in the Sync Arabi programme, a collaboration between Sync Leadership, Art 2 Heart - Palestine, and Shubbak, which was generously funded by British Council.
