The Stereotype is the Story - a Long Table followed by aftercare

How do we hold our own when our truth might feed a ravenous stereotype?

Art holds up a mirror to some of society’s darkest corners. Whether cloaked in metaphor or told in literal retellings, artists are among our most astute commentators on justice, fairness and all that lies in between. But in a world drowned out by redundant and reductionist stereotypes, not least about Global Majority cultures, how can artists speak their truth without reverberating and possibly inflaming widespread half truths and lies?

The session will be held as a Long Table, a format for discussion that uses the setting of a domestic dinner table as a means to generate public conversation. Conceived by Lois Weaver in 2003 in response to the divided nature of panel conversations, the Long Table allows voices to be heard equally, disrupting hierarchical notions of ‘expertise’.

A light lunch will be lovingly offered

12.30-2pm: The Long Table will be facilitated by Bushra El-Turk and Hannah Khalil

2-3pm: The conversation will be followed by an aftercare session facilitated by Dr Sara Alsaraf.
